Testing was carried out on 26 March 2003 on the site of a proposed development to the rear of 38 Main Street, Swords. Three trenches were inserted by machine. In general, they revealed a very disturbed upper stratigraphy associated with the earlier use of the site. This upper layer of disturbance measured, on average, 0.2–0.3m in depth and it overlay an approximately 0.6m-deep layer of river gravel. This lay directly upon boulder clay and the upper levels of bedrock were encountered at 1.2–1.5m below the ground surface. A number of foundation bases were encountered and, in each case, these were associated with internal walls of the demolished building. No archaeological features or artefacts were found during testing.
