Monitoring of works associated with the Mayne Bridge Flood Alleviation Scheme commenced on 5 November 2003 and is ongoing. These works are being undertaken on part of the foreshore area and in three fields adjacent to the River Mayne. An enclosure site (SMR 15:55) is recorded to the north of the development and a potential Bronze Age burial mound (SMR 15:14) lies to the north-west. To date, work has been undertaken along the foreshore and in the fields to the north of Mayne road. The stratigraphy of these fields comprised 0.42m of plough-soil, with frequent inclusions of red brick, animal bone, shell and modern ceramics. This overlay light-greyish-brown subsoil, which gave way to sand towards the eastern limit of the site. Spreads of red-brick rubble and a patch of in situ burning of possible post-medieval or modern date were uncovered, but no archaeological material has been identified to date.
