Monitoring of topsoil removal continued in the townland of Kilgobbin, near Stepaside in south County Dublin. A residential development had begun on the site in July 2002. The lands lie between Enniskerry Road and Kilgobbin Stream on the lower north-facing slopes of Three Rock Mountain and incorporate the townlands of Kilgobbin and Newtown Little. In the previous year, three areas of archaeological interest were excavated prior to commencement of construction. Two of these contained post-medieval features (Excavations 2002, No. 637, 02E1104, and No. 607, 02E1220). The third site included two Bronze Age cremation burials and associated features (Excavations 2002, No. 606, 02E1196).

In 2003, topsoil removal concentrated on the central section of the development site and was carried out intermittently from February to May. Eight areas of archaeological interest were revealed, which were subsequently excavated by the writer (No. 616, Excavations 2003, 03E0306). A further area of archaeological potential was located in close proximity to Kilgobbin Stream and was excavated by Abi Cryerhall (No. 614, Excavations 2003, 03E0717). Several features relating to the post-medieval landscape were also revealed. These included a large number of land drains, field boundary ditches, a spread of charcoal and furrows. A small number of post-medieval finds were retrieved, as well as two sherds of medieval pottery and three pieces of flint.
