Monitoring was required for a replacement water main and drainage scheme within the confines of Phoenix Park, which is classified as an archaeological complex. The monitoring was carried out in late spring/early summer 2003.
The water main was laid along the verge of Chesterfield Avenue; the route veered south-west along the Furze Road and continued across the open green area to the Ordnance Survey Office. The drainage works were carried out along the grass verge on the Ordnance Survey Road.
Several 18th/19th-century drainage features were noted along Chesterfield Avenue. Two small areas of 19th-century rubble were exposed in the vicinity of the Ordnance Survey Road. A small area of cobbling associated with two red-brick fragments was noted at the south-west end of the Ordnance Survey Road. No features or finds of archaeological significance were exposed in the course of the monitoring.
