This site encroaches into the path of the River Poddle, a recorded monument (SMR 18:43(04)) and the city watercourse (SMR 18:43(02)). Both the river and the watercourse were important to the water supply system for the medieval town. Two more associated monuments are recorded in the vicinity of the site, a weir (SMR 18:43(03)) and a mill and millpond (SMR 22:77(01, 02)).
Test-trenches were excavated in December 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 565, 02E1826). No features or deposits of archaeological significance were found during the testing. Due to the site’s proximity to four recorded monuments, it was recommended that all development groundworks be subject to monitoring. This took place in May/June 2003.
The ground level of the site was reduced by between 0.4 and 1m, exposing 19th-century imported soils and rubble layers. From this level, foundation trenches were excavated to boulder clay. All works were monitored and nothing of archaeological interest was exposed.
