A short excavation followed testing at a development site off Francis Street, when archaeological deposits were uncovered. The earliest soils were a c. 0.5m-deep garden soil, which contained few features, and no structural evidence. This dated to the 13th century. A fine ring-brooch was recovered from this soil.

Later 16th- to 17th-century soils underlay the foundations of a red-brick, mid-18th-century structure which appears to have been the first structure on the site.
