The site is located at the junction of Hanbury Lane and St Catherine’s Lane West, comprising a square area measuring c. 23m2, where a new office block was to be constructed. Because the site formed part of the land belonging to the 12th-century foundation of St Thomas’s Abbey, it was regarded as having archaeological potential, with burial remains a possibility.
An assessment, including the digging of three trenches, was carried out in March 2001 by Ruth Elliott. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered (Excavations 2001, No. 383, 01E0241). Another assessment was carried out in April 2003 by Judith Carroll (No. 537, Excavations 2003, 03E0439), which included the digging of another two test-trenches, but no archaeological material was revealed.
Groundwork during the construction phase of the project was monitored in October and November 2003. Grey-brown clay containing large volumes of stone, brick and concrete, etc., was removed across the site to a total depth of around 3m. There were no features, deposits or finds of archaeological significance.
