Monitoring of groundworks associated with the development of Massey’s funeral home commenced on 26 May 2003 and is ongoing. To date, two phases of monitoring have been completed and a third is due to commence shortly.
Excavation of foundation trenches and underpinning of the Widow’s House and Parke’s Arch were monitored by Eoin Sullivan in May 2003 (No. 512, Excavations 2003). Monitoring of ground reduction to a depth of 3m for the insertion of a basement in the south of the site was carried out from 12 to 21 August 2003. The stratigraphy comprised 0.6m of rubble clay, 0.5–0.8m of post-medieval garden soil, with occasional fragments of animal bone, overlying boulder clay and gravels. No archaeological features were uncovered, but several sherds of post-medieval pottery were identified in the garden soil.
