Additional testing was carried out in February 2003 at the site of a proposed development at the Mercy Family Clinic, South Brown Street, Dublin 2, after demolition of the existing buildings at the site had commenced. An assessment of the development had been carried out in 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 520).
A single trench was excavated to the level of natural geological strata (approximately 2.25m below present ground level) at the eastern end of the development area. The evidence uncovered indicated the presence of extensive remains of post-medieval buildings. This was consistent with the information available from cartographic sources, which indicate a series of successive structures at the site from the early 18th century. The remains of some of the earlier buildings would appear to have been deliberately collapsed in on themselves so as to raise the ground level of the site. Later buildings and the present structures at the site were inserted into this platform.
There was no evidence of earlier activity pre-dating the post-medieval buildings. A layer of compact organic clay was noted at the base of the trench, which may represent the original topsoil horizon. However, the presence of a deposit of large stones at the eastern side of the trench immediately above the level of natural would suggest that the structural detritus at the site extends to the depth of the natural, at least in places.
