An assessment was carried out as part of a pre-planning application investigation of the subsurface remains to the rear of 4–6 Ardee Street, The Coombe. The investigation took the form of mechanically excavated test-trenches. Subsoil was encountered at depths of c. 2.5m below modern ground level. In all trenches, the ground consisted primarily of building rubble. Tanning pits, a 19th-century red-brick cellar, a red-brick-lined well and post-medieval stone walls were encountered in the three excavated trenches. As the proposed development contained a basement, full excavation in advance of development was recommended. This excavation was carried out by Steve Linnane (No. 493, Excavations 2003, 03E1710).
