Monitoring of the ground disturbances associated with the River Tolka Emergency Flood Alleviation Scheme, between Distillery Weir and the Botanical Gardens, Drumcondra, Co. Dublin, allowed for a detailed record to be compiled of the river banks/walls and associated areas as part of the archaeological requirement for the flood relief measures associated with this site.
The riverbed has been subjected to dumping from both riverbanks over time, and is strewn with modern debris. Monitoring of the materials removed during dredging revealed features of archaeological interest near both Distillery Weir and Drumcondra Bridge. Above Distillery Weir, sections of walling associated with diverting the waters through a series of sluices were uncovered. At Drumcondra Bridge, stone and brickwork relating to the Tolka Cottages was discovered near the south bank, as were sections of walling which would have made up an early riverbank associated with the former Clonliffe Paper Mill complex on the north bank. No other features or artefacts of archaeological significance were discovered during this project.
