An assessment, which had established the potential for archaeological activity within the area, had been carried out within the lands in November 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 506). The lands under consideration lie adjacent to Donabate train station and Turvey Avenue and are being developed for residential use. Monitoring of topsoil removal commenced in September and continued up to December 2003. Two areas of interest were revealed. One lay along the gently sloping north-facing ground within the proposed main site access, the other within the north-eastern quadrant of the site close to the eastern boundary. The former had been noted during the assessment phase and was excavated under licence 03E1634 prior to construction (No. 484, Excavations 2003). The second comprised a number of shell deposits, which will be investigated in 2004.
Two parallel 19th-century iron pipes were noted, which are thought to relate to the water supply for the hospital in Portrane. Several stone land drains ran in an east–west direction across the land and a complex of post-medieval north–south-running furrows was noted throughout the areas monitored. No other deposits of archaeological interest were noted. A flint blade was recovered from the topsoil in the proposed access road to the carpark of Donabate train station.
