In December 2003, an assessment was carried out in advance of construction of an apartment block at Balbriggan Harbour, north Co. Dublin. Prior to the assessment, the site (97m long by 16m wide) was being used as a carpark, but it had, from the late 19th to the mid-20th century, been used as a coal yard, known locally as Griffin and Tallon’s coal yard.
Six trenches were excavated by mechanical digger. In each trench substantial quantities of redeposited sand and clay were identified over bedrock. The sand and clay had been used to level up the ground prior to locating the coal yard on the site. One of the partition walls of the coal yard was located in one trench and a well-laid cobble floor for the yard was located in a further three trenches. No finds or other features of any archaeological significance were uncovered.
