Five trenches were mechanically excavated on the site, which lies immediately west of the medieval church, in February 2003. A substantial number of medieval or early medieval pits, gulleys and ditches were uncovered in each of the trenches. Trench 1, in addition, produced a medieval drain, cobbling and traces of hearths, and a well of unknown date. The density of the features shows that the area saw substantial early medieval and/or medieval activity. The features, however, seem to be largely of agricultural origin and the thick layer of medieval cultivation soil overlying them shows intensive medieval agriculture in the area. A number of large ditches were also uncovered. These seem more likely to represent boundaries and could be of medieval or early medieval origin. The lack of post-holes or other features suggestive of houses or buildings and the lack of burials suggest that the area may not have been part of the actual medieval monastery of Finglas. Finds included human bone, medieval pottery and ceramic roof and floor tiles.
