Testing was carried out on the site of a proposed extension to the existing late 20th-century building at 25–26 Usher’s Island, which is located on or near the site of a recorded watermill. This mill, known as Usher’s Flour Mill, was still in existence around 1850. Two trenches were excavated, one to the north and one at the south of the site. A partially demolished and backfilled basement structure was uncovered in the north-east of the site. This was constructed of red and yellow brick bonded with lime mortar and plastered with concrete, and an associated floor surface was also uncovered. There were deep deposits of 18th–19th-century rubble in the north and south of the site, but no archaeological stratigraphy was identified.
