Historical and cartographic evidence demonstrated that Talbot Street is located beyond the limits of the precincts of St Mary’s Abbey, illustrating that the site was likely to have no medieval stratigraphy. Talbot Street was developed towards the end of the 18th century and originally comprised both Cope Street and Moland Street. The actual site appears to have been part of the Department of Education’s holdings on Talbot Street in the 19th century. As such, the site remained undeveloped until the latter half of the 19th century. The excavation revealed 19th-century foundations abutting a substantial wall forming the street frontage to the site. These foundations can be dated to post-1876, as no development is shown on this site until 1908 (OS). The ground reduction over the site was monitored and the extant remains were recorded.
