Additional testing at the former Wyeth Chemical Stores, 765 South Circular Road, Islandbridge, was undertaken on 11–12 March 2003. Initial test excavation was undertaken in 2002. On receipt of plans showing a piling grid for new structures and modifications to existing protected structures, the City Archaeologist indicated the extent and location of further test excavation on the site. This was to address the following: the nature and extent of late 17th- or 18th-century deposits on the site; the nature of any earlier structure or revetments to the main millrace; structural evidence for earlier buildings within block M (a protected structure); where possible, the extent of disturbance of known and demolished later 18th- or 19th-century buildings was to be determined.
Every attempt was made in the testing to retain such foundations in situ. No medieval deposits on this historic mill site were uncovered; however, any development will be subject to monitoring to record in full the industrial remains which appear to date from 1785 onwards.
