Due to the serious contamination on this site, the original assessment was abandoned in 2002 and rescheduled under strict health and safety protocols in 2003. This assessment was carried out in conjunction with demolition on the site. Trenching was carried out over four days in June 2003 concentrating on the northern portion of the site, whereon stood the Hibernian Marine School (Architect Thomas Cooley, 1740–84). Testing was also carried out along the Cardiff Lane frontage and along the western extremity of the site, an area that Rocque illustrates as a Rope Walk. Testing confirmed the existence of extensive remains of the main block of the Marine School. Its two wings were still standing at the time of testing. The basement level of the school is intact, although filled with rubble following its demolition in the late 1970s. This portion of the site is not being developed at this time and further work on the Marine School is scheduled to record the basements. The testing over the remainder of the site was inconclusive, as the site was heavily industrialised and, as a result, seriously disturbed. The level of contamination was such that excavation by hand was a serious health-and-safety risk. Monitoring is ongoing.
