The site covered a north–south block area, which is bounded on its northern perimeter by St Mary’s Abbey, Little Strand Street to the south and Capel Street to the west.
Three phases of testing were carried out; the initial two phases did not reveal any evidence for significant archaeological deposits. The overall conclusion suggested that the area has been subject to extensive clearance, infilling and development. The stratigraphy was generally homogenous, consisting of extensive demolition, infilling and clearance. Nineteenth-century filled-in basement remains extended along the Mary’s Abbey frontage, which in turn had been built on natural riverine gravels.
Phase three testing at the west side of the site revealed the base-plate remains of medieval timber revetments, eleven timber pieces in total. The position of the timbers (at a depth of 3m) indicated that the revetment appeared to have been built perpendicular to the River Liffey, extending in a north–south direction. The partial remains of two leather shoes were located underneath one of the timber pieces (wood and leather reports pending).
