Readymix (NI) Ltd submitted a planning application to extend Tullyhinan Quarry at Banbridge, Co. Down. The proposed extension will take in an area approximately 240m by 100m along the northern and western perimeters of the existing site, in an L-shaped formation.
Monitoring of topsoil removal took place from 3 to 10 March 2003. The area under investigation had already undergone some disturbance during previous quarry activity. The topsoil removal was carried out using a mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket.
Topsoil-stripping along this western edge of the present quarry did not reveal evidence of archaeological activity within this portion of the quarry extension.
