Testing was carried out at Test Area 8, Rathmore townland, Finner, Co. Donegal, between 14 and 17 July 2003. The scheme involves the construction of the proposed N15 Bundoran/Ballyshannon Bypass as part of the National Roads Authority’s programme for upgrading the N15 Sligo to Lifford Road. Survey work had identified a previously unrecorded site, Site 9, consisting of a possible farmstead with ancillary features.
The assessment of Site 9 and the adjoining fields involved the mechanical excavation of 31 trenches. Testing exposed a structure, possibly the farmstead previously identified in the EIS as Site 9A, a redundant field boundary, Site 9H, and a small charcoal-rich deposit and burnt spread. Finds included a chert scraper, a tunic button and a coin.
