The site of the proposed development, a new Garda barracks, parking and related services, is located within the townland of Portnason, just outside Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, facing onto the Sligo Road. An assessment of the site, including testing, was carried out in November 2003. Five trenches, four measuring 70m by 1.25m and one measuring 50m by 1.25m, were excavated, all orientated north–south. No evidence of archaeological activity was revealed on the site.
