Testing was carried out at Test Area 4, Magheracar, Bundoran, Co. Donegal, on 11 July 2003. The scheme involves the construction of the proposed N15 Bundoran/Ballyshannon Bypass as part of the National Roads Authority’s programme for upgrading the N15 Sligo to Lifford Road. Survey work had identified a previously unrecorded site, numbered 26, in Test Area 4.
The site identified in the EIS consisted of a semi-subcircular soil mark orientated from north-west to south-east measuring 39.4m externally north-west to south-east by 29m internally. There were also traces of a circular feature measuring 1.3m east–west towards the centre of the site. Testing by ten trenches throughout two fields exposed a consistent stratigraphy of grass overlying a peaty layer below, which was natural boulder clay. There was no subterranean evidence for either the semi-subcircular feature or the central feature identified in the EIS.
