Pre-development testing at the site of a proposed industrial park at Killybegs, Co. Donegal, was carried out on 18 June 2003 and on 1 and 2 September 2003. The site was located on approximately 27 acres of rolling upland, which was comprised of poor grazing (much of which is marshy with rushes), scrub, rock outcrop, a lake and an area which has been backfilled in recent times.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of nine trenches, which measured 17.3–82m long. They were 1.3–1.7m wide and 0.15–1.1m deep.
The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil, above blue/grey/orange/brown friable silt loam, mid-brown friable sandy silt loam, grey/brown plastic clay, blue/grey friable–firm silty clay loam, grey/orange/brown firm sandy clay loam and bedrock. A modern rubble land drain ran across one of the trenches. Three modern pottery sherds were recovered from the topsoil.
The evidence from all trenches was of undisturbed natural stratigraphy. Below the topsoil was found sterile natural subsoils and bedrock.
