It is proposed to construct a new sewerage scheme for the town of Killybegs, Co. Donegal. This will comprise the construction of a new wastewater treatment works, construction of two new pumping stations and upgrading of another. Seven metres of new foul sewers will be installed.
One of the monuments in the area is SMR 97:15, an archaeological complex comprising a church and graveyard, a holy well, a castle and a settlement. The proposed main pumping station will be located at the western edge of the constraint area around the complex. In addition, one of the lengths of foul sewerage will run north–south along the western edge of the complex.
Five engineer’s test-pits were excavated along the route of the pipe that will run along the edge of the complex. These were for the purposes of establishing the depth of bedrock. These pits were c. 1–2m long and of varying depths. Nothing of archaeological significance was exposed in any of the test-trenches.
