Monitoring was undertaken with the aid of a licensed detection device at Bunbeg Harbour, Bunbeg, Gweedore, Co. Donegal, between 7 and 25 January 2003. Works undertaken on behalf of Donegal County Council involved extending the existing pier 90m westward and re-dredging an existing access channel into the harbour. It is envisaged that, by extending the pier westward, berthage within the harbour will be increased, and by dredging the access channels the draft within the harbour will be deepened to enable easier access into the harbour. The average depth of dredging was 0.93m. Monitoring work was carried out on-site at the point of extraction, and the dumped fill was subsequently scanned with a metal detector.
Stratigraphy encountered during excavation of the site comprised an upper deposit of a compact mixed dark-grey to black layer with pebble-sized stones, oyster, winkle and cockle shells, and a dark-grey clay all fused together. This overlay a grey natural sand.
A number of sherds of modern pottery and clay pipe were recovered from the base of the feature. Nothing of further significance was noted.
