Testing was carried out at Barnes Lower, Termon, Co. Donegal, on 18 December 2003. The proposed development involved the demolition of a house and the erection of a new dwelling with septic tank. The development is near Toberenny well and turas station, a standing stone site and a children’s burial ground (SMR 35:9–11, respectively). Toberenny is c. 18m from the existing house.
Five trenches were mechanically excavated within the footprint of the proposed development. Excavation exposed a number of stone-filled drains, probably contemporary with the existing building, c. mid-19th century. The drains were designed to divert excess water to the rear of the old house. No other features or finds were uncovered during the testing programme.
