This application is for a three-storey office building, works and parking and a new entrance, at the north-west end of Ballyshannon. This area of back gardens had been lowered by 0.5m and then levelled to some extent by the addition of builders’ rubble.
Testing showed that the southern half of the site was covered in builders’ rubble directly on the undisturbed boulder clay and the northern half was covered in gravel and crushed stone for parking. In neither trench was there any indication of topsoil. Testing of the access drive showed the area to have been used in the past as a dump for metal, rubble and rubbish in rich black soil on the undisturbed boulder clay.
Clearly the soil from the site had been removed. There was no indication of archaeology in any of the three trenches.
