An assessment and excavation previously carried out at the rear of St Columb’s Hall, Orchard Street, Derry, had uncovered a 1m-deep deposit of black, organic silty clays underlying c. 1m of modern overburden. This has been interpreted as being part of the 17th-century town ditch that partially enclosed the walled town of Derry.

A foul sewer was installed to the immediate north of the new build running close to the historic town wall. In keeping with the agreed methodology, the formation level for this trench lay within the modern overburden and its cutting was monitored. Nothing of significance was uncovered within the service trench.
