Monitoring was carried out during construction work on a large development site bounded by Lapp’s Quay, Clontarf Street, Oliver Plunkett Street Lower and Custom House Street, Cork. The site was enclosed within sheet piles and a cofferdam and fully excavated to a depth of up to 7m below street level in order to accommodate two levels of subsurface carparking. The excavated material consisted of relatively modern fill material overlying natural silty clays and, at the lowest levels, natural riverine gravels. The fill material derives from the reclamation of the area in the early 19th century and from subsequent developments on the site. The limestone quay wall was recorded and partially dismantled, with a view to it being reinstated at a later phase in the project. The large-scale excavation works at the site will be completed in 2004. No finds or features of archaeological interest were found to date.
