Monitoring was undertaken during groundworks associated with the removal of a haul road and a tidy-up operation below the new bridge constructed over the Tourig River as part of the N25 Youghal Bypass. Both the southern slipway and river haul road were removed. The northern haul road had been constructed over the original shoreline, which was partially visible, and over three potential archaeological sites, Sites 8–10, a linear stone feature and two wooden posts. No trace of these sites was identified during monitoring, but a single wooden post identified within the shoreline at low tide was identified as Site 10. A second wooden post was also identified within the river at low tide and may be associated with Site 9. The imported clay below the new bridge was also removed and used in the reinstatement of the shoreline at English Quay, which had been eroded by the tide during road construction.
The two wooden posts were not impacted upon during the tidy-up operations and remain in situ. All groundworks have now been completed and no further work is required.
Funding for the work was provided by the National Development Plan 2000–2006 and was awarded by the National Roads Authority.
