Testing was carried out in advance of construction along the route of the proposed N8 Rathcormac–Fermoy Bypass on behalf of Cork County Council. In 2002, during this phase of centre-line testing, a single pit was exposed towards the centre of the field. The site was subsequently designated Skahanagh North 5 and was excavated in August 2003.
An area measuring 240m2 was opened around the pit and no other features were identified. The sides of the pit were heavily oxidised and the fill contained flecks of charcoal. Post-excavation analysis will provide a radiocarbon date for this feature, but, as it is isolated, its significance is limited.
This work was funded in full by the National Development Plan 2000–2006 and was awarded by the National Roads Authority.
