Testing was carried out in advance of construction along the route of the proposed N8 Rathcormac–Fermoy Bypass on behalf of Cork County Council. In 2002, during this phase of centre-line testing, a number of features of archaeological potential were exposed at Scartbarry. The site was subsequently designated Scartbarry 4 and was excavated in September 2003. Topsoil-stripping revealed a pit of unknown date and an apparently unassociated shallow charcoal spread. Both features were isolated and had no apparent function. A number of other shallow spreads were investigated. These were not archaeological in nature and were identified as root disturbance. One find was recovered close to the charcoal spread. This was a worked stone implement of unknown date or function. This site was of limited archaeological significance.
The work was funded by the National Development Plan 2000–2006 and was awarded by the National Roads Authority.
