Testing was carried out in advance of construction along the route of the proposed N8 Rathcormac–Fermoy Bypass on behalf of Cork County Council. In 2002, during this phase of centre-line testing, a number of features of archaeological potential were exposed at Scartbarry. The site was subsequently designated Scartbarry 3 and was excavated in August 2003. After stripping the appropriate areas within the road-take, a number of features of archaeological potential were identified. These included two post-medieval field boundaries and four pits. One field boundary curved slightly and was identified as a curvilinear ditch. However, when fully exposed it only curved in one section and was otherwise linear and non-archaeological. Two pits were located in close proximity to each other and may have been related. They had no apparent function. The other two pits were isolated and had no apparent association. Two charcoal samples were retrieved and will be sent for radiocarbon analysis.
This work was funded by the National Development Plan 2000–2006 and was awarded by the National Roads Authority.
