Testing was carried out in advance of construction along the route of the proposed N8 Rathcormac–Fermoy Bypass on behalf of Cork County Council. In 2003, during an additional phase of centre-line testing, a fulacht fiadh was exposed at Fermoy. The site was subsequently designated Fermoy 4 and was excavated in October 2003. Topsoil-stripping revealed a fulacht spread measuring 10m by 12m. Although badly disturbed by modern drains, the fulacht sealed a timber-lined trough, a hearth and two pits. The pits were filled with fulacht material and the hearth was located adjacent to the trough. Charcoal samples were retrieved from the fulacht and analysis of these will provide a date. Apart from the trough timbers, there were no other finds from this site.
