An assessment was undertaken at Drom South, Castletownbere. The development site consisted of 3.673 acres. It is located within the zone of archaeological potential for a ringfort and souterrain.
Five trenches were excavated in the area of the possible ringfort. The modern entrance to the backfilled souterrain was recorded. No trace of a ringfort was recorded. The ringfort is not illustrated on any of the editions of the OS map. The proposed development site is situated within an undulating landscape. The anomalies identified are a feature of the natural landscape. Three other trenches were excavated in the southern portion of the site. No archaeological stratigraphy, features or artefacts were recorded.
