Testing was carried out in advance of construction along the route of the proposed N8 Rathcormac–Fermoy Bypass on behalf of Cork County Council in 2002. During this phase of centre-line testing an anomalous spread of purple sandstone was identified at Corrin. The site was subsequently designated Corrin 5 and was excavated between 6 and 7 October 2003. The spread of sandstone proved to be a modern ‘haul-road’, associated with the erection of ESB pylons in the field. No archaeological features were uncovered.
The work was funded in full by the National Development Plan 2000–2006 and was awarded by the National Roads Authority.
