Testing was carried out in advance of construction along the route of the proposed N8 Rathcormac–Fermoy Bypass on behalf of Cork County Council in 2002. During this phase of centre-line testing a spread of burnt-mound material and an isolated possible pit were identified in Corrin townland. The site was subsequently designated Corrin 4 and was excavated over a period of one week in October 2003.
An area measuring 1000m2 was fully excavated in advance of road construction. This revealed a spread of burnt material that consisted of a thin layer of heat-shattered sandstone in a matrix of black carbonised silty clay. It was irregular in plan, with dimensions of 17m by 8m by 50mm deep. The spread partially overlay a subrectangular unlined trough with dimensions of 2.6m north–south by 1.06m by 0.5m deep. Three pits, one post-hole and four stake-holes were also recorded in the vicinity of the trough.
The work was funded in full by the National Development Plan 2000–2006 and awarded by the National Roads Authority.
