A Grant of Planning was issued to demolish an existing paint store and erect six apartments within the zone of archaeological potential for the city of Cork with a condition which required the excavation of test-trenches. The site lies on the north channel of the River Lee close to the disused graveyard of the former North Infirmary Hospital (SMR 74:33(02)) and St Anne’s Church (74:33(03)) and graveyard (74:33(01)), Shandon.

In October 2002 four test-trenches were opened under this licence along the footprint of the proposed development (Excavations 2002, No. 277). No archaeological features were noted in the trenches. A fifth trench along the entrance way was not excavated at this time, due to site access issues. This trench was excavated in July 2003, to a maximum depth of c. 1.3m and width of 1.5m. A concrete layer of 0.1m was removed, below which was a loose rubble fill containing earth and stone to a maximum depth of 0.85m. Bedrock was encountered between 0.35 and 1.3m. No finds or features of an archaeological nature were noted in the trench.
