Planning permission was granted for the development of 70 holiday houses and three apartments, a treatment plant and alterations to the entrance at The Lawns, Castletownshend, Co. Cork, with a condition which required monitoring of all ground disturbance. An EIS carried out on the site in February 2001 noted a potential circular enclosure/ringfort. Testing in the area of the potential feature in June 2001 (Excavations 2001, No. 140, 01E0553) revealed no features or artefacts of an archaeological nature.
Monitoring took place on-site in April and May 2003. Fulacht fiadh material, 10m by 3m, was identified in the southern section of the site, 1m from the northern bank of a stream. A smaller area of burnt stone was also identified 1.5m further west. The development in this area of the site was to be raised by 1m, leaving the fulacht fiadh material undisturbed. In consultation with DĂșchas and the site engineers, the fulacht fiadh material was covered with a sheet of membrane and then overlaid with soil 1m in depth.
