Planning permission was granted for the construction of houses at Back Road, Castletownbere, Co. Cork. The proposed development site lies near the Convent of Mercy burial ground. A condition of planning required testing. Eleven trenches were excavated on-site. Topsoil consisted of a dark loam with inclusions of plant roots, sharp stones, broken bricks, broken glass and fragments of 19th/20th-century ware. Subsoil was stiff, whitish clay with stones. Occasional stretches of natural rock were exposed. No archaeological finds or features were noted on the site.
