This excavation was carried out around the external south-west corner of Rathbarry Church in March 2003, in conjunction with conservation work being carried out by Cork County Council, who funded the excavation. Excavation had previously been carried out around the west tower in 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 256). As the corner was in danger of collapsing, it had to be dismantled and the present excavation was necessary to facilitate inspection and consolidation of the foundations. A 0.6m-wide trench was excavated for a distance of 2m northwards and eastwards from the corner. The fill of the trenches consisted of a build-up of soil and rubble, with some fragments of human bone.
