A Grant of Planning was issued for the development of three dwelling-houses at Creggane, Buttevant, Co. Cork. The vacant site lies to the rear of a main street shop premises with rear yard and is accessed via a laneway to the south. The site lies within the zone of archaeological potential for the town of Buttevant and c. 200m west of Buttevant Bridge (SMR 17:106). A condition of planning required monitoring of all subsurface excavation and topsoil removal.
Rubble from a recently demolished building formed the upper level of the site. The site lies within an area formerly quarried for limestone. Excavation of foundation trenches exposed stratified layers of stone and a soil fill to the base of the trenches, c. 1m below present ground level. Limestone rock outcrops, up to 4.5m wide, were exposed in two of the trenches. Nothing of an archaeological nature was noted.
