Pre-development monitoring was carried out at Ballynakilla East, Charleville, Co. Cork, as part of a planning application for the construction of a dwelling-house. The site is near a field where extended human inhumations were uncovered during quarrying for gravel in the mid-1950s. The site was inspected then by Professor M.J. O’Kelly, who concluded that the skeletons represented the site of a 1798 battle. The assessment of the new development entailed investigating those areas where maximum ground disturbance was to occur. Topsoil was removed from the footprint of the house, the entranceway and the driveway. No finds or features of archaeological significance were noted in any of these areas.
