Pre-construction testing took place on the grounds of the Old Ground Hotel prior to the construction of a bedroom extension block. Testing entailed the opening of three trenches on the imprint of the proposed extension block to the rear of the hotel.
No archaeological deposits were encountered, which is not surprising when considering the vast amounts of previous ground disturbance that has taken place in the recent past associated with building bedroom extension blocks and laying of services. Extensive modern excavation works were manifest in all three trenches in the form of sewers, pipes and cables.
