Monitoring of topsoil-stripping took place ahead of the construction of 58 detached and semi-detached houses on the north-eastern edge of Ennis, Co. Clare, during May and June of 2003. The development is close to SMR 33:42, a stone enclosure, and to a delisted monument, SMR 3:134, a rectangular enclosure, now destroyed or buried. The site occupies the top of a shallow rise, sloping gently away to the north and east. It was divided into pasture fields. The site was stripped of topsoil in the footprint of all houses, roads and services. Topsoil overlay an iron-red subsoil, which in turn overlay a silver-grey boulder clay. Some ditches filled with stone or topsoil were recorded, but these were dated by modern pottery. The removal of several drystone walls was also monitored. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded.
