Pre-construction testing took place on a site on the outskirts of Ennis, relatively close to Clare Abbey, as part of a pre-planning assessment for the building of a housing scheme. Testing entailed the opening of nine trenches on the site.

Although located near Clare Abbey, testing revealed very little evidence of substantial human activity. Apart from an isolated furrow, there was no evidence for ploughing. This was not surprising when taking into account the peat deposits and flora encountered, which both reflect a wetland environment.

One anomaly was identified during field-walking, a north–south-aligned bank. Testing of the feature suggested that the bank comprised one context—the clay subsoil—with no associated banks. Considering its location, it is proposed that the bank function was either as a land boundary, or some form of flood defence.
