The N18 Ennis Bypass would involve the construction of a 13.8km eastern bypass of Ennis from Latoon, outside Newmarket, to north of Barefield, at Cragard, along with a 7.1km western relief road from Killow to Claureen, outside Ennis.
Site R2 was recorded as an area of archaeological potential, due to the fact that river crossings and flood-plains often contain important archaeological remains. The site is located on either side of the River Fergus.
The excavation of five test-trenches within site R2, totalling 147m2, failed to produce any material of archaeological significance.
