An excavation was carried out at Rakeevan, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan. The proposed development is near a ringfort site, SMR 34:42. An assessment was carried out on this site by Tara O’Neill in February 2003 (see No. 68, Excavations 2003). Two features of possible archaeological interest were identified: a possible hearth feature and the remains of a burnt spread. They were excavated in May 2003.

The possible hearth feature turned out to be non-archaeological and the burnt spread covered an area that measured 3.8m by 2.5m and had an average thickness of 0.3m. This site was also monitored under licence 03E0242 (see No. 68, Excavations 2003). A second burnt spread, identified during the course of monitoring, was also resolved under the current licence. This truncated and disturbed feature covered an area that measured 8m by 4.6m and varied in thickness from 0.1m to 0.5m.
