An assessment was carried out at Rakeevan, Bailieborough, on the site of a proposed development which relates to the construction of 51 residential dwellings with associated services. The proposed development is located close to a ringfort site, SMR 34:42. Testing was conducted on the site on 27–28 February 2003 by means of the excavation of seven trenches. Two features of archaeological significance were exposed, a hearth and a fulacht fiadh spread; both were located within Trench 4, at the western extent of the site. Full excavation of these features was carried out by Linda Clarke (see No. 69, Excavations 2003). Monitoring was subsequently carried out under this licence. A second burnt spread, identified during the course of monitoring, was also resolved under licence 03E0725 (see No. 69, Excavations 2003).
